The city of Florence is not very large but it is world famous. Not only was it the birth place of the Italian Renaissance that revolutionized our world view and our art, but even today it remains a center of culture. Millions of people visit Florence every year to visit the museums and see the amazing architecture.
To handle this stream of visitors the city has a modern airport, named after one of the most famous explorers, Amerigo Vespucci, a native of Florence. Although almost 100 years old (!) the airport was not very important until the major rebuilding between 1984 and 1992. The airport has daily connections to many European countries and is serviced by Alitalia (of course), Air France/KLM, Austrian and Lufthansa. Because of the mountains to the northeast of the city most procedures are done from and to the southwest. The airport has limited taxiways and you will need to back-taxi over the runway to reach the terminal.
