Safe as Milk is the debut album by Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band, originally released in 1967. It is a heavily blues-influenced work, but also hints at many of the features—such as surreal lyrics and odd time signatures—that would later become trademarks of Beefheart’s music.

The album is also notable for the involvement of a 20-year-old Ry Cooder, who plays guitar and wrote some of the arrangements.

Perhaps best likened to an Italian Tom Waits, singer/songwriter Vinicio Capossela channeled influences spanning from two-fisted novelist John Fante to poet and philosopher Samuel Taylor Coleridge to forge an experimental, profoundly literary approach to popular music quite unlike anything else in the contemporary European sphere. Born in Hannover, Germany, on December 14, 1965, Capossela came of age in the underground clubs of Italy’s Emilia-Romagna region. A protégé of folkie Francisco Guccini, he issued his debut LP, All’una e Trentacinque Circa in 1990, winning wide acclaim for idiosyncratic melodies and arrangements inspired by tango and gypsy music as well as lyrics that drew allusions and comparison to writers like Charles Bukowski and Louis-Ferdinand Celine. Modì followed in 1991, and the following year Capossela moved into theater, scoring works for actor Paolo Rossi’s Milan-based troupe, most notably Su la Testa. Subsequent albums including 1994′s Camera a Sud and 1996′s Il Ballo di San Vito both refined and expanded Capossela’s approach, and 2000′s Canzoni a Manovella won the Targa Tenco and the PIM, two of the premier honors in Italian music. After several years of touring, which yielded a series of live LPs and videos, Capossela in 2004 published his first novel, Non Si Muore Tutte le Mattine. Two years later he finally returned to the studio for Ovunque Proteggi, recorded with guitar great and longtime Waits sideman Marc Ribot. ~ Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide – Amazon.com

“Sian Alice Group chart transformations from psychedelic rock, pastoral
  folk, and piano-lounge balladry into analog-synthtronica, free-jazz
breakdowns, pounding Afro-tech grooves, and avant-classical composition.
The beauty of Sian Alice Group is that the band is capable of creating
highly effective music even when they stray far from traditional torch-
  song territory.” – Pitchfork

“Some artists walk a fine line between the abstract and the arranged,
creating a sense of spontaneity without being overly rehearsed. Sian
Alice Group accomplishes just this. What’s more, it does so while
simultaneously recalling great artists but sounding completely unique.”
  – Filter

Sian Alice Group (pronounced “Shahn”) – a collective of UK musicians
Sian Ahern, Rupert Clervaux and Ben Crook, amongst other collaborators –
had quite the rookie season in 2008. From the epic 59.59 and The Dusk
Line (a subdued piano and vocals only EP) to the wholeheartedly
experimental Remix 12’’, the band made the scene, built up stellar stats
and positioned itself as a contender to be reckoned with. Now we lift
the curtain on 2009. Sian Alice Group is back with Troubled, Shaken Etc.
  – their second album of lush, minimalist, panoramic torch songs for The
  Social Registry.

Ben Crook relays: “The whole of 2008 was radically life changing
personally, professionally and for all of the world. For me, it was the
fin-de-siecle year that 2000 never was. The dire economic, social,
political and environmental state of the world could no longer be
ignored.” This powerful, post-ironic conception of society and art
thoroughly informs the more direct efforts of Troubled, Shaken Etc.

The band hones in on a genre-busting combination of organic
improvisation, process-driven experimentation and the focused strength
earned from a year of extensive traveling and touring the world
together. You get your minimalist trances, electronic exploration,
techno thump, jazz motifs and Eastern music tropes in a joyous and
complete listening experience. It’s a snapshot (or more closely, a
yearbook) from an eventful 2008 that is more raw, emotional and loud
than anything they’ve released thus far.

Let’s put the songs under our trusty microscope and see what we find.
Troubled, Shaken Etc. kicks off with “Love That Moves The Sun.” It’s a
bouncy realization of minimalism set to the cosmos. Arpeggios (on both
guitar and vibraphone) set a repetitive tone and Sian Ahern’s powerful
vocals resemble the sort of expansive clouds we learned about in a 7th
grade science class. “Close To The Ground” begins with a Terry Riley
meets Theo Parrish figure that slowly morphs into stomp-rock territory
with organic four-to-thefloor rhythmic intensity. “Vanishing” provides a
unique take on techno. Rupert Clervaux’s drums are like a wild Elvin
Jones who lived through the rave era, and the vocals provide angelic
whole tones over the unhinged bounce. “White” is a surprise. It makes us
want to re-enroll in college circa 1994, take naps on a grassy knoll and
dream of the heartbreak awaiting us throughout the next two decades.
Simply put the guitar interplay on this track is totally breathtaking.
  It’s automatic mixtape fodder.

Troubled, Shaken, Etc. reveals an extremely hardworking band that is
focused on process, craft and how their interpersonal relationships can
serve as a catalyst to document life in an honest, original and
innovative manner. The band (led on these technical issues by Clervaux)
masterfully handles the production, and we can’t emphasize enough just
how strong Sian Ahern’s vocals have come through.

As Clervaux reflects: “The developing solidity in Sian’s voice naturally
veered us away from using as much reverb as we did on 59.59, which makes
the vocal much more immediate. The same can be said for the percussion,
which is in abundance, as always, but is now much dryer and louder.”

With guest spots from live mainstays (Sasha Vine, Eben Bull and label-
mate Mike Bones), as well as John Coxon (Spring Heel Jack) and Graham
Barton, Troubled, Shaken Etc. is a varied record with tons of
collaborative hands on deck. Everything is in place and poised to make
2009 a huge year for the band. So much stellar work in so little time…
Maybe we should test Sian Alice Group for steroids.

Albums of the Year: Honorable Mention by Pitchfork Staff:

Despite the changing sentiment towards gas-guzzlers, this Barcelona group
retains a fascination with the cosmopolitan age of the car. The obvious
reference point is its name, which recalls John DeLorean’s boutique auto
start-up, just as it did the extravagant culture of early-80s dance that
Delorean’s disco rhythms highlight. The second is a little less obvious to
Americans: The record is inspired by the real life Ayrton Senna, the Brazilian
Formula One world champion who used racing as a metaphor for life. Obscuring
some of the dance-punk tendencies inherent on previous full-length Transatlantic
K.K., Delorean utilize piano-driven house hooks and palm-muted guitar to paint a
picture of such zealous exuberance. “Seasun”, the record’s heart and soul,
balances its ravey house character with a crescendo somewhere in between a
tribal chant and Des’ree’s “You Gotta Be” played at double-speed, underwater.
These days, we should appreciate such escapist bravado.

Elvis Perkins – Ash Wednesday (2007)

Elvis Perkins - Ash Wednesday (2007)

Before the release of his first album, Elvis Perkins’ promotional approach seemed to be an update of the archetypal modern troubadour: through a few live dates and well-timed associations, he managed to stir up a measure of pre-debut fame. Like fellow emergent singer/songwriter Benjy Ferree, Perkins comes from LA (his father was late Psycho star Anthony), and the buildup to Ash Wednesday was a carefully scripted, high-profile whistle-stop tour. Shows on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, Austin City Limits, and Seattle’s adult-rock tastemaker KEXP quickly established a fan base seemingly interested as much in his unique backstory and outside-of-time image as his music itself.

On Ash Wednesday, it becomes quickly apparent that Perkins has taken copious stylistic notes from an earlier self-mythologizing American troubadour. Aside from the clear phrasing and timbral similarities, the surrealistic lyrical tendencies of Bringing It All Back Home and Another Side of Bob Dylan are obvious throughout, while the eerie religious evocations on the title track (“No one will survive Ash Wednesday alive”) and opener “While You Were Sleeping” (“They hung young Cain from the Adam trees”) clearly connect the record to Dylan’s dark, biblically-informed John Wesley Harding.

Wednesday certainly seems designed to evoke a timeless feeling of closeness and warmth. The stand-up bass and sharp snare hits that pervade the record give “Sleeping”‘s stream-of-consciousness lullaby appropriate accompaniment before giving way to the gentle New Orleans brass that takes the song to its conclusion. Later, “May Day!” is the record’s rousing singalong, augmenting rough electric guitar with a shouted, glasses-raised chorus.

Perkins’ ability to merge instrumentation and lyricism to create a romantic’s sense of atmosphere is Wednesday’s most striking component, best represented on the accordion-tinged, historically informed Parisian set piece “Emile’s Vietnam in the Sky”. The song opens with references to a surrealist artist and a turn-of-the-20th century French play (“The Cocteau is covered in butter/ The ghosts of cappuccino and Zaza hover”) before making the intriguing cross-cultural connections of an educated traveler: “There’s nothing like French blues/ Blown by the unknown soldier in you.”

Perhaps logically, Perkins’ pop cultural bent and everyman aura also link him to the first of many “next Dylans” to emerge in the 1970s: Loudon Wainwright III. “Sleep Sandwich” takes a playfully imaginative turn: “Last night was the science fiction/ Movie with you and me/ You in your velvet space helmet/ Me in my rainbow hat,” and “All the Night Without Love” finds sentimental value and humor in innocuous everyday sights: “‘Touch me,’ the graphic reads/ On the magnetic athletic insole sheath/ She lets it go all its life without love.”
With Ash Wednesday, Elvis Perkins has emerged as an assured, fully-formed cosmopolitan able to merge readily recognizable influences with a sense of theatre too often missing from the legion of similarly-intentioned performers. LA-connected head start notwithstanding, Perkins proves that he’s certainly done his homework, but more importantly, that he possesses the ability to create a standalone work that is something more than merely the sum of a few well-worn components.
