Stone Sour - Stone Sour (2002) W/ Bonus Tracks @ 320 Kbps

Stone Sour is the debut studio album by American hard rock band Stone Sour. It was recorded and produced by the band and Tom Tatman at Catamount Studios in Cedar Falls, Iowa, and was released on August 27, 2002, through Roadrunner Records. Writing for the album began in 2000 while vocalist Corey Taylor was still actively involved in his other band, Slipknot. After producing some demos with Stone Sour, he and guitarist Josh Rand decided that they should put a band together. Work began on the album after Slipknot had gone on hiatus following touring in support of their second album Iowa.

Following the release of the album, Stone Sour went on to promote it for almost a year; releasing three singles and touring in several regions, including the United States and several countries in Europe. The album received generally positive reviews. It was praised for showing a diversity in Taylor’s vocals, which was not presented in Slipknot’s early albums. It was also certified Gold in the United States and two singles from the album received Grammy Award nominations for Best Metal Performance in consecutive years.

The Band

Amorphis - Tales From The Thousand Lakes (1994)

Amorphis is a Finnish metal band started by Jan Rechberger, Tomi Koivusaari and Esa Holopainen in 1990. Initially, the band was a straightforward death metal act, but in later albums they evolved into playing other types of genres.

Amorphis are well known for their use of the Finnish national epic, the Kalevala, as a source for their lyrics.

Genre: Progressive/Death/Doom Metal, Modern Rock/Melodic Metal (later)
Lyrical theme(s): War (early), Death, Finnish Legends, Kalevala

The Album

Amorphis - Tales From The Thousand Lakes (1994)

“Tales from the Thousand Lakes” is the second full-length album by Death/doom metal band Amorphis. A monumental concept album, the lyrics are based on the Finnish national epic, Kalevala. It was their first departure from the more aggressive death metal sound of their debut album to a more melodic death/doom metal sound, with more influence from early doom metal bands like Black Sabbath . This album features a greater use of synthesizers and clean vocals than their previous release.

This was the first Amorphis album to feature Kasper MÃ¥rtenson on keyboards. It is often hailed as one of the better Amorphis records, and was very influential and historically significant in the development of the Melodic Death Metal and Doom Metal genres.

It was later re-released in 2001 with all the tracks from the “Black Winter Day” EP and a cover of Light my Fire by The Doors added as bonus tracks.

Review: Metal-Observer (8.5/10)

For the third time already in a relatively short time the all star band around production giant Fredrik Nordström presents us with an album and the waves that “The Book Of Heavy Metal“ made were pretty damn big as one was flooded with superlatives all over. The first two albums absolutely had been to my taste, so that I was pretty curious about what the third strike had to offer. For a band that consists of such high carat musicians it is pretty remarkable that they already recorded the third album in the same line-up, normally you see more movement there…

Ralf already had shown himself a bit disappointed by the latest output of the Swedes, so how do I see it? Well, the beginning of the opening title track right away is a heart attack candidate, when Niklas Isfeldt let’s out a blood curdling scream. Once you have survived it, the song stomps through the room in best Eighties Metal fashion, again very catchy and powerful, good start, I would say. And also “Into The Moonlight” follows this up, powerful, catchy and melodic, with strong chorus, which has a light HAMMERFALL touch, so far I cannot really agree with Ralf’s disappointment… The guitar work is absolutely top, just listen to this solo, brilliant!

DREAM EVIL still pull out all cliches, but if the songs are good, I can definitely live with it, even though “The Sledge” cannot fully compete, “Crusaders’ Anthem” very nicely crashes through, as the title already implies, a true anthem, epic and melodic, once more borne by the strong guitars and the simply great vocals by Niclas, who I regard as one of the best of his trade, no question. Here we also once more get the certain Rock list, which DREAM EVIL showed in their compositions ever since their inception.

Also “Let’s Make Rock” is program, because this is the pure Heavy Rock/Metal that filled the arenas in the Eighties and this chorus will definitely have the whole crowd sing along, guaranteed! “Chosen Twice” is then an exquisite semi ballad with very big choir chorus and poignant guitar work, good one! “M.O.M.” with its chorus “Are you a man or a mouse“ can most probably be put into the same category as “Heavy Metal Jesus“, still super catchy and good! And also “The Mirror” is a strong one, where Niclas can how all his class.

That the production is absolutely top notch is out of doubt with Fredrik Nordström, clear and powerful, the musicianship is, as already mentioned, brilliant as well, the songs are good, therefore the rating is accordingly!

Halestorm – 2009

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

With a few notable exceptions (Courtney Love, Evanescence) the ’90s and aughts heavy rock scene remained largely a boys club. Lizzy Hale and her band Halestorm sought to remedy the situation with a muscular, metal and grunge-influenced update of Heart and Pat Benatar. The group’s self-titled major label full-length debut puts Hale’s aggressive, full-throated vocals and sexually charged lyrics front and center, backing them with stomping drums and raging guitars.

Review: Metal-Observer (10/10)

Well, what could you write about an album that every Metalhead already knows… Especially an album that had been recorded by a band like METALLICA. You can think about METALLICA anno 2001 whatever you want, but the class of their old albums remains undisputed. Their second epos “Ride The Lightning” is no exception.

1984 the Metallicats still played pure Thrash Metal. Still it was not as rough and uniformed as on “Kill Em All”. “Ride The Lightning” contains some of the best known and most probably also best songs of the band. For the first time, and that fairly early in the band-history, METALLICA managed to induce melody and atmosphere into their Thrash-songs. The intro to the opener “Fight Fire With Fire” is legacy to that. The mentioning of the song-title alone should be enough to make some people’s neck twitch in anticipation. The following title-track and the live-favourite “For Whom The Bell Tolls” for sure are receiving similar reactions. These songs are just immortal classics that this band won’t ever top off again, I fear. With the famous “Fade To Black” the first semi-ballad has found its way onto the album, just as much of a highlight as the first three songs. If it had not happened before, this song should finally have convinced every Metal-fan of what the band is capable of. For the first time METALLICA showed that they are able to play calm, atmospheric and emotional, too. Just listen to these great melody-lines and solos and you will sink to your knees and thank the Metal-god.

The second half of the songs is started out with “Trapped Under Ice” and “Escape”. These songs are somewhat forgotten jewels. If ever they are played live only very rarely and in general don’t receive too much recognition, which is a shame, because both are very good songs, which have some nice variety in them. With “Creeping Death” we get another fat kick in the ass towards the end, this track again stands for all the positive METALLICA-trademarks. A real steam-hammer. And the whole party is rounded up by the superb instrumental piece “The Call Of Ktulu”.

Like I had said before, what should you say about this album nowadays. In short, “Ride The Lightning” is just an immortal classic of Metal-history. Everything fits, sound, songs and atmosphere. And all of this just can mean one thing, just like hundreds of other Metal-journalists have done before: give this album the full rating. Let’s just hope that METALLICA sometimes might be able to release another hammer like this one, even though I have my doubts…

Check-out-tips: each and every song.
