In 1999, Pitchfork Media named Loveless the best album of the 1990s. Loveless is music like the inside of a lava lamp: a bright, colourful substance that seems to be floating around effortlessly, all the time combining and separating to create new forms and shapes, yet barely ever something that can be grasped or even defined; it is also similarly fascinating to behold, hypnotic even. Loveless is an assortment of curtains of sound that open, close, unravel and entangle. It’s the art of shapeless shapes, sounds waves forming melodic pillows, and all of this happens, strangely enough, within the narrow constraints of the pop song form.
Bilinda Butcher’s voice is dreamlike, even though she is just one musical layer among many. Don’t try to figure out her words; instead, try floating along with them.
“Soon”, the closing track, is something like when the hypnotist counts back at the end of the session to bring you back to reality. More compact than the other tracks, the seven minutes of rumbling delicate guitars end the dreamlike state this album induces.
All of this is pretty hard to explain, but if this album catches you in the right frame of mind, all your questions will be answered. The important thing is that you never ask, or even expect anything.
